RMD98MFY–This prominent circular feature, known as the Richat Structure, in the Sahara desert of Mauritania is often noted by astronauts because it forms a conspicuous 50-kilometer-wide (30-mile-wide) bull's-eye on the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert. Initially mistaken for a possible impact crater, it is now known to be an eroded circular anticline (structural dome) of layered sedimentary rocks. This view was generated from a Landsat satellite image draped over an elevation model produced by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). taken in 2000.

RMW0N07B–In late March 2018, North Africa endured a maelstrom of sand, with far-reaching effects. Dust from the Sahara spread north into Europe last week, coating ski slopes and Mediterranean cities in orange particles. Though there is often some amount of dust being blown around in North Africa, recent activity appeared to pick up (as viewed by satellite) on March 21, 2018, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired this image. Even by the standards of the desert interior of Africa, the storms of late March have been intense. Schools and airports

RM2WE81RT–May 26, 2022 - Libya - The remote Kufrah district in southern Libya sits at the heart of the Sahara Desert. Filled with sand dunes and rugged plateaus, much of the district is extremely arid. But it wasn't always so dry. Buried beneath the shifting sand dunes is a vast fossil aquifer and remnants of now-dried rivers. On May 26, 2022, the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired this image of the Kufrah district. It is the largest and least populated district in the country. In the upper left of the image, a sea of unconsolidated sand, the Ribiana

RM2WFF11R–Atlantic Ocean. 25th Jan, 2024. A large plume of dust from the Sahara Desert blew west over the Atlantic Ocean and then curled north toward Europe in late January 2024. Along its path, the suspended particles brought haze and poor air quality to Cabo Verde and the Canary Islands. Some of the dust that reached the United Kingdom mixed with clouds and fell to the ground with passing rain. The image was acquired by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) sensor on the NOAA-20 satellite. A large dust cloud expanded to the west over the ocean on January 24 and 25 before being redi
