The young man was. /A-AAA riLl-UKU obliged to begin at the lowest rung of the ladder;and to mount therefrom by slow degrees, and only asproved capacity clearly warranted such advancement.The advantages of birth and training, and invalu-able paternal advice were his, however ; and progressunder such conditions could not be long delayed.By October, 1873, when the house opened a storeat Thirty-eighth street and Sixth avenue, he hadtested and proved his worth in every department ofthe business, and the firm felt justified in giving himcharge of the new uptown establishment. He wasthen only twenty-one years of age, but he soonshowed that he was amply able to meet the re.sponsi-bilities of the new position. Since then he has beenan increasingly important factor in the management of the concern.
