Born in New York city in185;2, he received his early education in the schoolsof the metropolis, attending subsequently the MountWashington Collegiate Institute. A university train-ing and professional study might easily have followedhad his taste or inclination led that way ; but strongcommercial proclivities were a part of his birthright, and it seemed unwise to thwart the obvious will ofnature.
