A rat-catcher and his dog; to the right a woman looks on. A rat-catcher is a person who practices rat-catching as a professional form of pest control. Keeping the rat population under control was practiced in Europe to prevent the spread of diseases, most notoriously the Black Plague, and to prevent damage to food supplies. In modern developed countries, such a professional is otherwise known as a pest control operative or pest technician. Rat-catchers may attempt to capture rats themselves, or release ratters, animals trained or naturally skilled at catching them. Coscinomancy, or sieve-turning, as a means of divination. When held in the right way, the sieve will gyrate in response to questions: the method seems tohave been used successfully in the past to reveal the identity of thieves. The diagram is from the posthumously published writings of the great Agrippa, who was convinced that the sieve turned at the command of demons. Marie Fejfarová. Right: 101 years old. There are no old pictures of Marie as burnt all material memories of her life when she turned 101. With just a bathrobe and a toothbrush she knocked at the door of the long-term care home in Bubeneč. She left the villa with furniture, books, clothes and everything else to her “friends” who in turn were supposed to look after her in the long-term care home. They came just once and brought her a cake; they have never shown up again; they live in her villa. She also remembers hiding in a coal cellar form the Nazis in 1939 and the Russians in 1945.
