Merciful brother of the Venetian 'Brotherhood of Death', who assisted the criminals condemned to death in execution and buried them: one of the seven works of mercy. Similar brotherhoods existed in Rome and Florence. They are all from head to foot a black sack (Saccone) wrapped, which also falls over the face and leaves only the eyes; on the chest there is the image of the Crucified, on the mouth of the Mater Dolorosa, in the left holds the brother a picture of Christ in the right a scourge (According to the costume book of Cesare Vecellio),
