A depiction of the Garden of Eden and "topography of the earthly paradise" by Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), from 1675. Adam and Eve can be seen inside the walls, with angels at all four gates. Cain can be seen killing Abel at upper left outside the walls. Athanasius Kircher was a 17th-century German Jesuit scholar and polymath who published around 40 major works, most notably in the fields of "Oriental studies," geology, and medicine.
