RM2C7TR79–An old engraving showing Hull Castle, an artillery fort in Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England, UK in the mid-1600s. Together with two supporting blockhouses, it defended the eastern side of the River Hull, and was constructed by King Henry VIII to protect against attack from France. The castle had two large, curved bastions and a rectangular keep at its centre with blockhouses to the north and south. A curtain wall and moat linked the blockhouses and castle.

RM2CCJJE2–An old engraving from the River Thames showing The Palace of Whitehall (or White Hall), Westminster, London, England, UK in the 1600s. The palace was the main residence of the English monarchs from 1530 until 1698, when most of its structures were destroyed by fire. Henry VIII moved the royal residence here after the old royal apartments at the nearby Palace of Westminster were themselves destroyed by fire. Whitehall was at one time the largest palace in Europe, with more than 1,500 rooms. The palace gives its name to the famous street now located on the site.

Robert Curthose, son of William the Conqueror,built a wooden castle in 1080 (when the name Novum Castellum or New Castle came into being) . It was replaced by one made of stone in 1087 and was rebuilt in 1172. The keep seen today is part of that structure. In the 1630's, more than a third of the population (about 7,000) died of plague.

RM2CCJJDX–An old engraving of the Savoy Hospital (formerly the Savoy Palace), the Strand, London, England, UK in the 1600s seen from the River Thames. The Savoy Palace was the home of John of Gaunt until it was destroyed during the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. It was here that Henry VII founded the Savoy Hospital for poor people. It was the most impressive hospital of its time in the country and the first to benefit from permanent medical staff. Each evening the gates were opened and the poor entered and were allotted a bed for the night. In the morning they left (though the sick were allowed to remain).

The Banda Islands are a group of 10 tiny volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, about 2,000 km east of Java, and are part of Indonesia. During the 16th and 17th centuries, these remote islands were European explorers’ most prized colony due to the fact that they were the world’s sole source of nutmeg and mace. They were first claimed by the Portuguese in 1512. The Bandas were then seized by the Dutch and British East India Companies.

The site was long known as ‘Wool Quay’ and a custom house levied duty payable on exported wool. Around 1380, one John Churchman built a custom house there. It remained in use until 1559. Its replacement (shown here) was erected under the direction of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, the Lord High Treasurer. This structure was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.

RM2B01B1H–India: A coloured drawing of Sulaiman Shikoh (15 March 1635 - 16 May 1662), eldest son of Crown Prince Dara Shikoh, late 1600s. Shazada Muhammad Sulaiman Shikoh Bahadur was the eldest son of Prince Dara Shikoh of the Mughal dynasty. His father was named heir apparent after Emperor Shah Jahan fell ill in 1657, which led to a succession crisis with the other sons of the Emperor. Shah Jahan's third son Aurangzeb emerged victorious, and Sulaiman was forced to flee. He was eventually captured and imprisoned for a time, where he was poisoned regularly before being strangled to death in 1662.

RM2CCGCH5–An old engraving of Dunkirk, Nord, France in the 1600s showing the major port facilities and fortifications built that century. In 1658 it was controlled by Franco-English forces following the battle of the Dunes. King Charles II of England sold it to France in 1662. The town was developed into a fortified port. The town's defences were adapted to create ten bastions and a basin that could hold up to thirty warships. A channel dug to the sea secured by two jetties. The jetties were defended by 5 forts. The defences and the port facilities were demolished in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht.
