It commandsthe St. Marys River and the approach tothe mouth of the canal. Saut Ste. Marie, C. W., is a scatteredsettlement, where is located a part of theHudson Bay Compriuy. Here is a steam-boat landing, a hotel, and two or threestores, including the Hudson Bay Com-panys; and it has from 500 to 600 in-habitants. Indians of the Chippewa tribereside in the vicinity in considerable num-bers, they having the exclusive right totake fish in the waters contiguous to therapids.
