The Indianola hadtwo propellers in addition to her side wheels, and she was worked by seven engines in all. Shewas heavily armored with 3-inch iron plates. Her clever capture by the Confederates in thedarkness was one of the achievements of the Confederate navy; and had it been followed up by theraising of the vessel, the Federals would have had a most formidable antagonist on the Mississippiin the vicinity of Vicksburg, where on the water side they were having things their own way.. As soon as war had been declared it became evident thatVirginia would join the seceding States, and before the hastyand ill-advised evacuation of the great navy-yard at Norfolk, the Federals destroyed as much of the property as they could.Six of the seven ships that were then in the Gosport yard, onthe 20th of April, when the destruction was commenced, weretotally destroyed, but the seventh, the screw frigate Merrimac, after being biuned almost to the water-line, was saved afterthe Federals had left, and the Confederate authorities, underthe direction of John Isl. Brooke, late lieutenant, United Statesnavy, immediately started the reconstruction of the Mreck onplans tliat were new to na^al warfare. On the 8th of ]March, in the following year, the armored Merrimac^ rechristened theVirginia, raised the hopes of the Confederacy, and closed theday of the wooden battle-ship by the sinking of the Cumhcr-Jand and the destruction of the Congress in Hampton Roads, Airginia.
