Great interest was shown at this timein the South African work. In the sum-mer of 1814 the first Methodist mission-ary, John McKenny, arrived in Cape-town. The illiberal Dutch East IndiaCompany, however, refused to let himpreach, and he had to content himselfwith holding a few private meetings.He was then instructed to proceed toCeylon. Two years later the pioneermissionary for South Africa, BarnabasShaw, landed at Capetown, nine monthsbefore the Presbyterian, Robert Moffat, who became later so famous in the an-nals of missions. By this time the col-ony had been ceded by the Netherlandsgovernment to Great Britain, and Mr.Shaw found work to do among thetroops as a kind of military chaplain..
