Kurt Reuber served in the Wehrmacht as a field surgeon during World War II. He produced this charcoal drawing on the back of the Soviet map at Christmas 1942 during the Siege of Stalingrad. Kurt Reuber was taken prisoner in February 1943 and died in January 1944 in the POW camp in Yelabuga, while the drawing was survived and is now displayed in Berlin.
