RMG8BCPX–The Queen Mother meets members of the ship's complement during her farewell visit to the liner Queen Elizabeth at Southampton. With her are Sir Basil Smallpeice, Cunard Chairman, and captain Geoffrey Thrippleton Marr, Commodore. The liner will be retired and berthed in Florida.
RMG7PPK7–Sir Vivian Fuchs, Director of the British Antarctic Survey, is shown aboard the RRS John Biscoe on it's arrival at Southampton making friends with Halignant, known as Malig, a husky. Sir Vivian was on hand to greet the ship bringing home 19 members of the Survey who have spent up to two years in Antarctica. Malig, has been brought back by Mr Bellars, the ship's veterinary surgeon, who has been examining the dog population at various bases. Malig is thought to be suffering from a form of haemophilia. The dog will be studied while in quarantine to determine the precise nature of the condition,
RMG7PPJW–Pictures taken 200 miles above the Antarctic by the American satellite Essa 3 are shown by pipe smoking Sir Vivian Fuchs, Director of the British Antarctic Survey, to Captain Anders Jacobsen, Master of the Perla Dan, at Southampton. Sir Vivian was meeting the ship on her arrival with 18 scientists and technicians who had been working at British bases in the Antarctic for 2 and half years. He said the satellite pictures had been of tremendous help in guiding the Perla Dan and the John Biscoe through ice by radio from London. They were assembled by the Americans and sent to the Survey's London
