Roman authorities tried hard to avoid Christians because they 'goaded, chided, belittled and insulted the crowds until they demanded their death. Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, did not desire death, but died a martyr, bound and burned at the stake, then stabbed when the fire miraculously failed to touch him.
