The Yongle emperor designed them to establish a Chinese presence, impose imperial control over trade, impress foreign peoples in the Indian Ocean basin and extend the empire's tributary system. Zheng He was placed as the admiral in control of the huge fleet and armed forces that undertook these expeditions.

The three sets of Latin inscriptions set out information about the imperial privelege sources and dedication of the prints, including the role of Durer as designer and cutter. The Latin text at the top of this remarkably accurate figure translates Images of the Southern Skies.

This map was produced at the height of British Imperial power and shows direct British rule extending all the way from Iran (Persia) to Thailand (Siam). Most of the contiguous Indian Ocean littoral, from South Africa to Singapore and Australia, was also under British administration or de facto control. It is relevant to note that the map shows Sikkim extending north into the present-day territory of China's Tibetan Autonomous Region. Similarly Darjeeling is shown in eastern Nepal.

The Hanoverians tried to retake Munster, but on 15 September the French succeeded in lifting the siege of the town. The Hanoverians returned again on 30 October, and after a 20-day siege, the French had to abandon it, leaving with the honours of war on 21 November 1759. Published in 1765 by the cartographer Jean de Beaurain (1696-1771) as an illustration of his Great Map of Germany, with the events that took place during the Seven Years War.
