RM2J2DNGY–A secret test flight of a Hawker Siddeley (Bae) Nimrod ended in an emergency at Newcastle Airport. The plane landed just hours before the Government was expected to announce a decision in favour of Nimrod's for the airbourne early warning system to be used by the RAF. 7th December, 1986.

The three original Nimrod R.1s, and the attrition replacement, were used for a wide variety of Electronic / Signals Intelligence gathering missions, often being equipped with specialist equipment for short-term missions.

RM2RGAAKA–Hawker Siddeley HS.801 Nimrod R.1 XW665 of no.51 Squadron at RAF Wyton. XW665 was one of three Nimrods especially ordered for use as Electronic and Signals Intelligence gathering aircraft. With highly specialised electronic surveillance equipment the Nimrod R.1s were extensively used to gather intelligence form the former Warsaw Pact countries, flying over the Baltic sea and arctic seas, as well as hot-spots worldwide.
