Viscountess Canning was the wife of Charles, 1st Earl Canning, Governor-General of India during the Mutiny. She arrived in India in 1856 and accompanied her husband to Calcutta, where she found life restrictive and isolated but actively supported the new art of photography. Lady Canning died of malaria in 1861 and was buried at Barrackpore, West Bengal.
