Iran: Portrait of Fath Ali Shah Qajar (5 September 1772 – 23 October). Painting by Ahmad (fl. early 19th century), c. 1811. Fath-Ali Shah Qajar (Fathalishah, Fathali Shah, Fath Ali Shah) was the second Qajar Shah (king) of Iran. He reigned from 17 June 1797 to 23 October 1834, during which Iran permanently lost its northern territories in the Caucasus (modern day Armenia, Azerbaijan, Dagestan and Georgia) to the Russian Empire after the Russo-Persian Wars of 1804-1813 and 1826-1828. By the end of his reign, Iran was on the verge of collapsing due to severe economic problems.
