The plaque on the wall says "This hotel is the oldest inn in Keswick. It was originally the George and Dragon but the name dragon was dropped on the accession of King George I. Here German miners of lead and silver whose smelting house was at the forge, paid their dues to the officers of Queen Elizabeth I and here also many unscrupulous traders bought the plumbago ore stolen from mines in Borrowdale. It was here that the Earl of Derwentwater called, the last time he was in Keswick, to quaff a tankard of ale from the saddle, after which he rode off to join in the 1715 (Jacobite) rebellion which ended in his death on the scaffold on Tower Hill, London."
