He led the 1745 Jacobite rising, landing in the Hebrides in August. He was defeated by the Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden, 1746, after which he escaped to France. Nicknamed 'the Fox', was a Scottish Jacobite and Chief of Clan Fraser of Lovat, known for his feuding and changes of allegiance. He was a supporter of King George II in 1715, but in 1745 he changed sides and supported the Stuart claim on the crown of the United Kingdom. Lovat was among the Highlanders defeated at the Battle of Culloden, convicted of treason sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded.
