Portrait engraving circa 1859 of Andrew Jackson. Jackson (1767 - 1845) was the seventh US President and held office from 1829 to 1837. He was a dominating figure in American politics in the 1820s and 1830s and had a reputation for toughness which earned him the nickname of “Old Hickory”. He was also the military governor of Florida in 1821 and commander of American forces at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 (the final major battle of the War of 1812). Engraving by Alexander Hay Ritchie (1822 – 1895), based on a painting by artist Dennis Malone Carter (1827 – 1881).
