This protected area created in 1954 to preserve such magnificent petrified trees that during the Jurassic period formed part of a humid landscape plenty of forests far different from the present arid and dry geography. During the cretaceous period the surrounding volcanoes covered the place with ashes that buried the giant trees that were subject to the petrification process that conserved them for millions of years.
