Jane Smith holds a photo (dated 1984/5) of her brother Clarke Pearce at her home in Flankley, Birmingham. * She said that she was devastated by the news that Satpal Ram has been released from prison on licence after serving 15 years for the fatal stabbing of Clarke in a Bengali restaurant in Birmingham in 1986. Ram's sentence was reviewed after judges at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ruled that former Home Secretary Jack Straw breached the human rights of convicted murderer Dennis Stafford by keeping him in jail longer than recommended by the Parole Board. They said that the power of a government minister to overrule the board was used illegally.
