"Hall’s Coca Wine. The Elixir of Life." Print advertisement by Dudley Hardy (1867-1922) English artist. Coca wine was introduced in the mid 19th century and widely sold as a medicine or tonic. It contained leaves of Erythroxylum Coca which contains the alkaloid cocaine. Coca was used by South Americans for hundreds of years and acts as a mild stimulant and suppresses hunger, thirst, pain, and fatigue. After the addictive nature of cocaine became apparent in the early 20th century these products became illegal.
