Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, also named Taiso Yoshitoshi, was a Japanese artist. He is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e, a type of Japanese woodblock printing. He is additionally regarded as one of the form's greatest innovators. His career spanned two eras – the last years of feudal Japan, and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration.

French expeditioner Garnier wrote: “In the grand square of Oubon, this remarkable sculptured wooden elephant saddle is preserved. On both sides of the cage there are two shields to protect the fighters and two quivers to hold the arrows and the lances. The back piece is richly sculpted with many roses and arabesques encrusted with small pieces of silvered and colored glass and precious stones.”

RM2B012XD–Laos: The Buddhist temple of That Luang was overgrown in the abandoned city of Vientiane when a French expedition arrived. Engraving by Louis Delaporte (1842-1925), 1866-1867. Vientiane was conquered in 1779 by Siam. When King Anouvong attempted an unsuccessful rebellion in 1827, the city was looted and burned to the ground by Siamese armies. Abandoned for many years, Vientiane was depopulated, overgrown and in great disrepair when a French expedition arrived in the 1860s. It was passed into French rule in 1893 and became the capital of the French protectorate of Laos in 1899.
