Bariloche stands at the eastern or Argentinian end of the Lake District Route crossing the Andes from Puerto Varas in Chile. The modern town developed around a shop (La Alemana 'The German') established by Carlos Wiederhold, a German-Chilean immigrant, who crossed the Andes from Llanquihue, near Puerto Varas. Austrians, Germans, Slovenes, Chileans and Italians had settled Bariloche by 1895. In the 1930s the city was given the appearance of an alpine town. With a current population of 100, 000, it is the largest city in the Lakes Region.
