More information:

An oxbow lake is a feature common on low level river floodplains, where its course is often slow, following long curves, or meanders. The river course can eventually change, usually during floods, cutting through the short length of land at the neck of the meander, creating a new channel through which the body of water will flow. Over time the river will deposit more and more material (mud, sand, silt etc), cutting the meander off from its new course.
