Seventeen Red Cross vehicles blessed by Archbishop of Canterbury before going to Abyssinia . A convoy of 17 Red Cross lorries and cars , the first unit to be sent to Abyssinia from the British Red Cross , were blessed by the Archbishop of Canterbury , Dr Cosmo Gordon Lang , at St Thomas ' s Hospital before their departure from London . Photo shows , the Red Cross convoy passing through Whitehall on its way to Westminster for the blessing ceremony . 13 November 1935
