He was assistant minister in Inveresk. Parish Church, 1909-10, and subsequently as-sistant minister -in New Greyfriars, Edinburgh, 1910-12, when he was elected to the parishof Kinloch - Rannoch, in the Presbytery ofWeem. While a student in Arts, Urquhart joinedthe Scottish Horse in the year of the foundationof the University troop and, feeling he owedto his country a debt for the military traininghe had received during his arts career, heenlisted about September 1914 as a Privatein the Royal Scots (McRaes Battalion). Afearless thinker and a beloved pastor, he wasnow to show himself a gallant soldier. In1916 he received a commission in the 1stBattalion, Black Watch, where he was ageneral favourite among his fellow - officers.While leading his men to battle in MametzWood on 16 August 1916, he was instant-aneously killed.
