In the last days of June, or the earliest days of July, the great trumpet-shapedflowers expand, each eight to nine inches long, andfour or five inches across the mouth. They aregreenish-yellow when they begin to open, but purewhite when fully opened, when they show a red-purple band inside. The great stem bears fromtwelve to twenty, or even more, of these flowerswithin some two feet of the top. The fragrance is powerful and delicious, and carriesfar in the still summer evenings when the light iswaning, at which time these grand Lilies look theirbest.
