Jul 14, 2006; Clewiston, FL, USA; Florida Fish and Wildlife official Steve Stiegler carries a haul of alligator eggs through Lake Okeechobee to an airboat. It is not uncommon to sink waist deep in water or mud when jumping out of a boat on the Lake to search for eggs. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials, Alligator farmers, and volunteers, hunt for alligator eggs each summer in the thick marsh of Lake Okeechobee. In an effort to control the alligator population, officials report that egg hunters recovered 150, 000 last year. The eggs are sold to alligator farmers for $5.00 per egg who in turn raise the alligators for the food and apparel industries. Mandatory Credit: Photo by Damon Higgins/Palm Beach Post/ZUMA Press.
