Kilgore, was born March10, 1862, at North Neury, Maine—a statewhich has furnished more enterprising men, in propoiiJon to its population, to developthe great Northwest, than any other state inthe Union. His father, Isaac T. Kilgore, wasa carpenter and farmer—occupations which, in the early days of Maine, a great lumber-ing state, were very frequently combined.Wallace obtained his early education in thecommon schools. He then attended BridgtonAcademy, the Mecca of all wide-awake NewEngland boys, where he prepared for college.He entered, in 1882, Bowdoin College, the HISTORY OF THE GUEAT NORTHWEST.. WALLACE! W. KILGORE. well known jSew England institution whichhas always stood high for scholarship, andwhich has tui-ned out many brilliant and use-ful men. While at college Mr. Kilgore wasa member of the Theta Delta Chi Greek let-ter fraternity. He won the oratorical prizein the junior year, and at the same time wasprominent in athleticism, being the managerof the Bowdoin College baseball team in1886. That same year he graduated with thedegree of Bachelor of Arts. In 1889 he tookthe degree of Master of Arts. His activework of teaching was begun in the countryschools of Franklin county, in that state. Inwinter, especially, when many young mentaking college courses engaged in teachingto pay their way, these schools are of a highgrade.
