Will you kindly give ua some advice as to the selection of a good boiler com- pound? One of our engineers is desir- ous of using coal oil, but we are some- what skeptical about its effects, never having heard of its being used as a boiler compound. Do you know any- thing about it! What compound do you consider the best? C. W. D.—la. Especially when none of the pre- pared boiler compounds is readily avail- able, coal oil (kerosene) is often used and it gives satisfactory results, not only in the boiler itself but in the heat- ing coils, where it lessens oxidation. About one pint per month is used for a 50-horsepower boiler, and the same pro- portion in larger and smaller boiler's. Another material which serves the same purpose, and which is readily ob- tainable, is sal soda. One pound of this may be dissolved in a gallon of water and used in a SO-horsepower boiler. It will cause the water to foam and after four or five days the boiler should be thoro
