Families rushing to escape Metz, at the front of the crowd is a traditionally dressed woman, in head dress and dirndl skirt, holding a white flag. An injured or dead man is lying at the side of the road still holding his travelling bag. The French surrendered on October 27th 1870 at Metz, following the Battle of Sedan. Date: 1870
