The Saladin Citadel of Cairo is a medieval Islamic fortification in Cairo, Egypt. The location, part of the Muqattam hill near the center of Cairo, was once famous for its fresh breeze and grand views of the city. It is now a preserved historic site, with mosques and museums.The Citadel was fortified by the Ayyubid ruler Salah al-Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 CE, to protect it from the Crusaders.

The former Nanshi district, literally 'southern city', was the historic heart of Shanghai. It included the old, walled city as well as the nearby docklands on both sides of the Huangpu River. Shanghai County was established at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. A city wall was built to repel the Wokou, and this Ming Dynasty wall defined the extent of urban Shanghai for the next few centuries.

For one thing France thought the forthcoming unification of the German States a thrreat to its own position foreign affairs in order to cover difficulties in domestic affairs. And then there was the offer to prince Leopold of Hohenzollern to take over the Spanish throne, which had been vacant after the expulsion of Queen Isabella of Spain (1868)
