William D. Hardyand Vernon Beall, retired engineers, stillstroll around to watch the demolition of thefamous building where, in the olden days, they were wont to call for their enginesand place them in shelter for the night. The roundhouse has cradled some ofthe finest mechanicians in the country.Men who began life as railroaders in thisbun-shaped structure have gone intoother fields and made good. Some havegone to the very top of the railroad ladderand few failed to state when occasionpermitted that they had started theircareers at the Old. FAREWELL, OLD ROUNDHOUSE ! Depot, ^GraftonHouse or therea-bouts. There is sad-ness manifested bymany at the passingof this building, butall realize that inthese days of progressand huge locomo-tives, the antiquatedroundhouse mustgive way. ClaudeBrown is on theground as the repre-sentative of the chief engineer and hehas plans for a structure that will surprisethe natives of Grafton, these plans havingbeen prepared by the Companys archi-tect, M. A. Long. Instead of the oldninety-five-foot stalls, there will be onehundred and ten-foot stalls for the loco-motives and the immense turn-table willbe a novelty that will be a magnet for theveterans who once got along handilywith a much smaller table. The accompanying photographs willshow the style of roundhouse in theolden days and the last vestige of theGrafton roundhouse of pioneer days. • KEEP CARS MOVING |j A car delayed one day represents the loss of earnings from handling one | |ton of coal on
