. 1979 Research accomplishments : forests for our needs. Forests and forestry Research United States. Research Helps Western Reclamation Seventy-two percent of our Nation's coal reserves are located on federally administered lands in the West. As development of these resources progresses, a key problem has been how to revegetate surface mine spoils with the objectives of controlling erosion, enhancing aesthetics, and restoring the land to productive use. Vlien strip mining of coal accelerated in the early 1970's in the Four Corners region of the Southwest, the biggest reclamation concern was whether vegetation could be reestablished on these low rainfall sites. Research by the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station aiid mining company reclamation specialists has sliown that plant establisliment is practical and feasible. Four native species have been established and maintained on mined lands in New Mexico's San Juan coal province. Research is concerned with the management of these and additional plants so the lands can be returned to their historic grazing use. Researchers at the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station and Montana State University, Bozeman, have developed a prototype minicomputer-based planning system to develop mine plans and reclamation strategies, and to estimate environmental impacts. This system is a powerful planning tool, combining the speed and accuracy of tlie computer with the professional judgment of the specialist-operator. Efficient data management features allow the operator to use infor- mation on coal, overburden, climate, hydrology, vegetation, and wildlife. Maps, cross-sections, isometric drawings, and other data displays can be created in minutes. This prototype planning system is located on the Montana State University campus and is available for demonstrations and expanded research. Environment.
