16-year-old Danny Wege, South Africa's soapbox racing champion, is in London on his way to Detroit, USA, where he will take part in the soap-box Derby for the world championship which will bring him £200 and seven years free training in any profession he likes if he wins. The soap boxes used are really small cars without engines. Driven like a bobsleigh, they can do as much as 50 miles an hour. The box must be home-made.
