Yellowstone River along scenic highway US 89 in Montana. The Yellowstone river rises in northwestern Wyoming in the Absaroka Range at the Continental Divide. The river starts where the North Fork and the South Fork Yellowstone River converge. It then flows northward through Yellowstone Lake and park and into Montana on its way to North Dakota . The Yellowstone is the last free flowing river in the lower 48 states of the US. From its headwaters in Lake Yellowstone downstream 670 miles to the Missouri River in North Dakota, the Yellowstone River flows in its natural state, undamed and untamed.
