WWI - A young british soldier leaving home and saying goodbye (perhaps for the last time) to his girlfriend, wife or mother. Many men volunteered to fight in WWI but the Military Service Act of 27 January 1916 authorised conscription Along with the Defence of the Realm Act, it brought Britain onto a “total war” footing.
