One wouldn’t have to spend much time going through my work to figure out that I really like this old Aermotor windmill that is still very much in service, pumping water from the ground for cattle. It sits on a ranch near the northern end of Lassen County California in plain sight just off US-395. I have photographed it several times at different times of the day and year. On this particular spring drive it was nearly mid-day, not normally optimal for visible light photography. I pulled over to shoot it with my infrared gear which it typically better suited to shooting in bright sun. I captured a nice “false color” image, accomplishing the mission. But as I stood there looking at the wonderful clouds and wildflowers I figured I better grab my visible light gear too. The clouds softened what would otherwise been very harsh light and added some wonderful interest to the sky while still allowing some nice warm spring light on the flowering field.
