WASHINGTON, DC - A statue of President Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States (1829-1837), in Lafayette Park in downtown Washington DC. It stands directly opposite the north grounds of the White House. The bronze equestrian statue depicts Jackson in military uniform surrounded by cannons. Cast by sculptor Clark Mills, it was dedicated on January 8, 1853, the 38th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, where Jackson had commanded US forces against the British Army. In the summer of 2020, protestors tried unsuccessfully to topple the statue during Black Lives Matter protests.
