Over half of the Carboniferous limestone hill & C1st/2ndBC hillfort have been quarried away. An Anglo-Saxon double monastery was founded within the hillfort around AD675/6. Abandoned after Viking raids of 874, a Norman Augustinian priory was established c 1120. The W tower of the priory church is in three stages with a battlemented parapet; largely C12th it was raised in C14th-15th. The quarry supplies decorative aggregates.
