View NE of The Pipers standing stones, West Penwith, England, UK, at 4.6m (SW stone) & 4.1m high (NE stone originally 5.05m when vertical), the tallest in Cornwall. Connected by legend to the Merry Maidens stone circle just to the S, all turned to stone for playing & dancing on the Sabbath. The standing stone at Gun Rith (Goon Rith) to the SW of The Pipers was their fiddler. Another legend makes The Pipers 'peace stones' set up to commemorate a treaty between the Cornish & English after Athelstan's final conquest of Cornwall in the early C10th. A pot of ashes is said to have been found by one of the stones.
