View back into Ngorongoro Crater from the ascent road. Driving up the ascent road the vegetation changes abruptly from dominating grasslands to dense and lush forests. The Ngorongoro caldera is 14 miles (22.5 km) across at its widest point. It is 2000 ft (610 m) deep. It grew to be this large by sinking of the caldera floor. Ngorongoro is now extinct. It once erupted trachytic flows and large quantities of pyroclastic materials. The caldera floor is very level and holds a salt lake.
