This image is taken head-on with the pair of horses walking towards the viewer and their owner driving them from behind. It is almost as if they are having a conversation! They are fully equipped for ‘Skidding’ tree trunks. Chains are attached to one end and the horses drag it a short distance to be collected by mechanical means. These horses were widely used in Europe to remove timber until the 1970’s. They are still used in certain situations as in Sites if Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) or where the impact on nearby flora and fauna needs to be minimal or the cost of machinery is uneconomic.
