More information:

"Transcending": This arch is a monument to the labor movement in Michigan. It was developed by the Michigan Labor History Society. The arc sits on a circular platform which includes five Vermont boulders, and also fourteen bronze reliefs depicting themes of labor. The stainless steel, broken arc rises 63 feet in height, and is completed by a blue light that joins the two pieces of the arc, which is supposed to symbolize the continued struggle of the labor movement. The arch is inscribed with this quote by Martin Luther King, Jr., "The arc of history bends toward justice." This was the part of his "I have a Dream" speech, which he previewed at Campus Marius just a few blocks north of this site.
