This bunker is one that formed part of the German defensive line that was attacked on 7 June 1917, the opening of the Messines prelude to the battle for Passchendaele. Nearby is Oostaverne Wood CWGC Cemetery and this general area formed part of the Black Line objective for the 29th (Western Butterfly Division) whose memorial faces the Cemetery.
