This bronze statue of a fisherman at a ship's wheel looks toward the harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, as a memorial to the thousands of fishermen lost at sea during the first three centuries (1623-1923) of that New England town's history. Taken from a biblical psalm is the monument's well-known inscription: "They that go down to the sea in ships." It is chiseled on a large block of granite that holds the 8-foot-tall (2.4 meter) statue by English sculptor Leonard Craske. This famous memorial is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
