Daughter of José Ignacio Echevarría Gorroño (died December 5, 2003) and Lucía Asteinza Stocke (April 14, 1927) both from Bermeo (Vizcaya), and the seventh of seven siblings, was born in Valencia. She subsequently moved to Madrid, where she graduated in English Philology and Journalism. Her first long book is a fictionalized biography of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, The Kurt and Courtney Story: Take This (1996). Her first novel, Love, curiosity, prozac and doubts (1997), received the support of Ana María Matute and, in addition, caused controversy by containing complete sentences from the novel Prozac Nation. The following year she won the Nadal Prize with her second novel, Beatriz y los cuerpo celestes.
