The former port pier Het Stenen Hoofd dates from 1902. This pier and the shed built on it were used until 1968 for the transfer of goods from moored ships to trucks and trains. The Stone Head consists of a bucket of sand in the IJ that is supported by no less than 11000 piles. In the late 1970s, due to the risk of collapse, the shed was demolished and the head of the pier was excavated. This intervention created the characteristic lagoon where the remains of the concrete foundation can still be seen.
